Yes, the Bible says not to borrow or lend, and not even to cosign for a loan. Your friend sounds selfish and petty and since she's prepared to end your friendship (doesn't sound like a friend you need), I think you should just explain to her that you notice she can afford trips and horses (sounds like a "friend" of mine!), but doesn't consider your friendship of much value by paying back even one penny of it. Since you need it, I'd demand it and not worry about losing this already loser friend.

You said you lent her this money in 1993 and she hasn't paid back even one cent of it? Is that right?

We never cosign and we only lend money with the expectation that we'll never see it again. Meaning that we do ask them to pay it back, but in our minds, don't believe they ever will, so we would never lend more than we would require be paid back. If lending money is a financial hardship to you or your family, I would NEVER DO IT! Just because someone else is a poor money manager, doesn't mean you need to be and put your own self or family at risk.

We've lent money many times and only twice have we been paid back. And we never lend to the same deadbeat more than once. They always have stories of how hardup they are, and we do it for the children's sakes, but they always have plenty of money for smoking, boozing, going out and bingo night.

We had a relative sobbingly ask us for money to pay her 3 months rent, or she'd get kicked out, her past due electric bills for several months or it would be shut off, and money for groceries. So we sent the money directly to the electric company and the rental place and sent some money for groceries. Within one week, she was calling on the phone demanding "My rent and electricity are due again, what are you going to do about it?" We said, "Nothing. You're on your own."

People.

I need your prayers and am inquiring of other people's experiences of lending or borrowing from friends. I had loaned a friend $1100.00 from my mortgage loan to help with her daughter's tuition because her ex husband wouldn't help and daughter was getting ready to get kicked out of her dorm for non-payment. She cried and said she couldn't borrow it from her parents because they didn't have it and she swore she wouldn't borrow from her sister because she had said no from way back when. It was money I didn't really have to lend, but I made her sign a promissory note back in Aug.93. She was going through a divorce and has since bought not one, but two horses and has gone on weekend trips that cost $300. She has yet to pay me back and said that when she does not to ask her for another favor and that I was putting our friendship in jeopardy by asking to talk about it. Should a true friend and proclaimed christian put the person she's friends with in this kind of position in the first place? It seems that my trust in friends and people has been put out completely because I trusted her to pay me back and I need help seeing if I'm in the wrong.
